High-five for volunteers - VSO flashmob brings Waterloo station to a standstill (for three minutes).
Hundreds of volunteers joined up with Channel 4 newscaster Jon Snow on Wednesday to celebrate International Volunteers Day with a flashmob at Waterloo station in London. Organised by international development charity VSO, the crowd took rush-hour commuters by surprise by clapping, cheering and high-fiving for three minutes as part of the celebrations to say thank you to international volunteers.
As the clock struck 8.30 am, the morning commute took a unusual twist as the flashmobbers erupted into a rapturous, and uninterrupted, round of applause before dispersing.
Flash mobber Matt Williams said: "The rush hour commute can be quite hellish, and people always look so miserable. We wanted to liven up their day, bring a smile to people's faces, and big-up the thousands of people who volunteer."
VSO will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. The charity has sent over 33,000 people to share their skills with some of the poorest communities in the world, including newscaster Jon Snow who worked in Uganda in the 1960s.
