Leave a legacy > Drawing up a will
VSO recommends using a solicitor to make or amend a will. A solicitor can ensure that your will is legally valid and that your wishes will be carried out. When drafting a will, some people choose to use the solicitor who assisted them in the purchase of their home. Alternatively, there is a professional body called STEP (the Society of Trusts and Estates Practitioners), which can provide you with a local list of solicitors who have experience in drawing up wills. STEP can be contacted by phone on +44 (0)20 7763 7152, or online at www.step.org. How to word your legacy
Your solicitor will know how to word a legacy but might find the following wording useful:
I give to VSO, 317 Putney Bridge Road, London SW15 2PN, UK (Registered Charity No 313757):
- all the residue of my estate
- % share of the residue of my estate
- the sum of £…
- an item or items of value (please give a full and accurate description)
to be used by VSO for its general purposes, and I direct that the receipt of the Hon Treasurer or other duly authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge of the said legacy. VSO could benefit from your company pension
If you are a member of a company pension scheme, you can complete an expression of wish form to benefit VSO or any other charity. In the event of your death part or all of the life insurance benefit will be paid to your chosen beneficiaries. The expression of wish form notifies the trustees of your wishes. It is simple to do with no legal complications. However, not all company pensions schemes are set up to do this, so you need to check with your employer.
If you have already included a gift to VSO in your will or are planning to do so, we would like to give you our heartfelt thanks – this really is a wonderful gift towards our work.
