Resources And Grants > Stories - HIV & AIDS workshops and presentations to a Women’s Institution group
Nicky Morgan, volunteer in Namibia, 2004-2005, raised awareness of HIV & AIDS amongst members of the Women’s Institute.
Nicky met with her local WI group before departure to introduce herself and tell them more about her placement. During her placement she wrote monthly bulletins covering some of the issues relating to HIV & AIDS such as gender issues and domestic violence. She followed this up with a presentation upon her return.
Nicky said, “ I really, really enjoyed it, and was surprised at how dynamic and enthusiastic the group was about Global Education. I would say that it’s worth asking groups you wouldn’t think would be interested, because you might be surprised – I was!” One participant remarked, “Lots of games and activities helped to break the ice and helped us feel comfortable discussing HIV & AIDS. Nicky increased our knowledge and showed us how we can get involved in tackling this global issue”. This project raised awareness and motivated the group to take action – which included a donation to the NGO Nicky had volunteered with in Namibia. Nicky was also asked to lead discussions with other community groups in her area.
