Where we do it > Pakistan - 10 facts

1. Indus Valley Civilization is more than 10,000 years old. The first village was found at Mehargarh in the Sibi District of Balochistan in about 8000 years B.C. This is comparable with the earliest villages of Jericho in Palestine and Jarmo in Iraq.
2. The 3 highest mountain ranges in the world, i.e. The Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindukush, meet in Northern Pakistan, near Gilgit.
3. In Sibi,  in the east of Pakistan, summer temperatures often rise above 50 degrees Celcius.
4. The name "Pakistan" means "Land of the Pure" in Sindhi, Urdu and Persian.
5. All the federating units constituting Pakistan (i.e. the 4 provinces, Pakistani side of Kashmir and Northern Areas) have their own distinct language, dress, dance, music, food and festivals.
6. 70% of VSO volunteers in Pakistan have been women.
7. The biggest salt range - and mine - in the world is located at Khewra, only 2 hours drive from Islamabad.
8. The current world champion Blind Cricket team is Pakistan. This is the second year running that they have held the cup.
9. Pakistan has the world's sixth largest population, estimated to be around 166,000,000.
10. Pakistani trucks are commonly adorned with colorful designs and paintings (See above!).
